1. AV Bi-weekly﹕Spots of Green Light amid Sheeran's domination Publishing Date: 2017/3/22
Ed Sheeran has become an "unbeatable foe" to many singer-songwriters. On BBC's Radio 1 pop chart published on March 10, the flame-haired singer "ruled the world" with over 10 songs in the top 40. Shape of You was a non-mover. Indeed, after the Adele sensation, which female singer is going to compete with Sheeran? Lorde's fans may have waited rather long, but she is returning to the arena, having Green Light ranked 28.
2. AV Bi-weekly﹕Moonlight Shines in Oscars Publishing Date: 2017/3/8
Moonlight (《月亮喜歡藍》) took away the top honour at this year's Academy Awards. Many movie buffs, like me, should be thrilled and feel justice done to this extraordinary movie. Its Chinese title projects its poetic cinematography too. In many scenes, the stillness and the abstract beauty of moonlight and the sea speak countless words.
3. AV Bi-weekly﹕Chasing Dreams Dreams in La La Land Publishing Date: 2017/2/22
La La Land (《星聲夢裡人》) has brought home seven of the awards at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, including best motion picture - musical or comedy, best director and acting awards for the two leads: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The urban fairy tale is very romantic, illusory but realistic.
4. AV Bi-weekly﹕Pelican212 Makes a Happy Family Publishing Date: 2017/2/8
Many high-profile entertainers, including the Rockettes (a renowned dance company), Elton John and Barbra Streisand, either turned down the invitation or were reluctant to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration. Some declined as Trump has shown disrespect for women and minority groups. The new President of the States has kept his tax records under wraps, which angered many Americans.
5. AV Bi-weekly﹕Let Martin Hurkens' Voice Raise You Up Publishing Date: 2017/1/11
2016 could be considered a cursed year in terms of the escalating tension around the world as well as the loss of legendary icons such as Prince, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, George Michael and Carrie Fisher. While the world is faced with risks, we may pray that there will be some repair in various aspects. Looking on the bright side, we haven't really lost those larger-than-life superstars, though they now belong to another dimension, as they left us their legacies and taught us a good lesson: that dreamers' passion never dies.
6. AV Bi-weekly﹕What the World Needs Now is Love Publishing Date: 2016/12/14
How well do we remember our last year's resolutions? Have we lived a healthier life, spent less money or even done our bit to make the world a better place? According to some studies, only about 8% of people achieve their new year's resolutions.
7. AV Bi-weekly﹕Doctor Strange Acquires Strange Power Publishing Date: 2016/11/30
The British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, well known for his TV role as Sherlock Holmes as well as his portrayal of Alan Turing's poignant life, cast his spell on Hong Kongers at the worldwide promotion of Doctor Strange one month ago. The acclaimed actor, together with the main cast, has special appeal to Hong Kong, and chose the city for the superhero movie's world premier for both its charm and Hong Kong being one of the three sanctums in the movie.
8. AV Bi-weekly﹕Bob Dylan - the Shakespeare of our time (2) Publishing Date: 2016/11/16
Bob Dylan started his career in folk music in the 1960s, which was an era of turbulence in the US and the world. When John F Kennedy was elected President of the United States, most Americans thought it was the dawn of a golden age; sadly, it was only a short-lived dream. America's involvement in the Vietnam War dragged on and the Blacks continued to suffer racial discrimination although they were set free in 1863, sparking off protests across the country. Dylan, in his 20s, by writing and singing anti-war and protest songs, became an instigator speaking for his compatriots by employing music for meaningful causes.
9. AV Bi-weekly﹕Bob Dylan - the Shakespeare of our time (1) Publishing Date: 2016/11/2
Bob Dylan delayed responding to the Swedish Academy whether he would accept the Nobel Prize in Literature because he was simply speechless to be honoured. We can rest assured that he will attend the prize presentation, despite having received harsh criticism by some about conferring the merits to him. It has been reported in The Guardian that a Lebanese novelist attacked the decision, saying, "Bob Dylan winning a Nobel in Literature is like Mrs Fields being awarded 3 Michelin stars."
10. AV Bi-weekly﹕The Beatlemania Comes Alive Publishing Date: 2016/10/19
Those who have no clue about what Beatlemania means, especially those born in the 80s or 90s, should not just Google it. They should experience it by seeing The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years (《The Beatles: Eight Days A Week──走過披頭歲月》), directed by Ron Howard, an Oscar-winning film-maker.
